Why Your EV Won't Turn On: Blame the 12-Volt Battery

The call usually starts the same way: "The car says 80 percent, but it won't do anything." The doors may not unlock from the app, the screen stays black or keeps rebooting, and pressing the brake and the start button gets no response.

The call usually starts the same way: "The car says 80 percent, but it won't do anything." The doors may not unlock from the app, the screen stays black or keeps rebooting, and pressing the brake and the start button gets no response. The owner assumes the big battery has failed. Almost every time I have been asked to look at one of these, the traction battery was fine and the problem was a small, ordinary 12-volt battery that most EV owners do not know they have.

It catches people because it feels like it should not exist. An electric car carries hundreds of volts under the floor, so why would it depend on the same kind of battery that sits under the bonnet of a 2009 hatchback? The answer explains both why it fails and how to keep it from stranding you.

What the 12-volt battery actually does in an EV

The high-voltage pack does not connect to the rest of the car all the time. It is isolated behind contactors, heavy relays that close only when the car is switched on. Something has to power the computers that decide to close them, along with the door locks, the screen, the lights, the alarm and the modem that talks to your phone app. That something is the 12-volt system.

While the car is on, a DC-DC converter takes power from the main pack and keeps the 12-volt battery charged, doing the job an alternator does in a petrol car. When the car is off, the small battery carries the load on its own. If it drops too low, the car cannot wake up enough to close the contactors, so the full main battery is effectively locked away behind a flat one.

Most EVs on the road still use a lead-acid 12-volt battery, often an AGM type. Some newer models have moved to small lithium-ion low-voltage batteries, and a few use a slightly different voltage. Check your owner's manual for which you have, because the testing figures below apply to lead-acid only.

Why it goes flat in a car that is plugged in every night

A common assumption is that plugging in keeps everything topped up. On many cars that is only partly true. Some models charge the 12-volt battery while the main pack is charging; others only do it when the car is on or during periodic wake-ups, and the logic varies between manufacturers and even between software versions.

Meanwhile, a modern EV is rarely fully asleep. Things that keep it awake and drawing from the small battery include:

  • checking the car in the phone app many times a day, since each check can wake the modem and computers;
  • camera-based security or guard modes that record around the car while parked;
  • cabin overheat protection and scheduled preconditioning;
  • aftermarket dash cams or trackers wired to permanent power;
  • a stuck module after a software update that never goes back to sleep.

Age adds to it. A lead-acid 12-volt battery in an EV has a harder life than you might expect, with frequent shallow cycles and few long drives. Owners often report replacements somewhere in the three to five year range, sometimes sooner, though I would not treat that as a rule; it depends heavily on the car, the battery type and the climate. If you are looking at a used EV, its age is worth asking about, alongside the questions in what to ask before buying a used electric car.

Reading the warning signs

The 12-volt battery rarely dies without hints. The trouble is that the hints look like software bugs, so people wait for an update to fix them.

With a multimeter and a car that has sat for a few hours, a fully charged lead-acid battery reads about 12.6 volts across its terminals. Around 12.4 volts is roughly three quarters charged, and anything near 12.0 is effectively flat. A reading taken right after driving will look healthier than it is, so test after a rest. A garage load test is more reliable still, because a tired battery can show a good resting voltage and still collapse under load.

"Just jump it like any other car" needs care

You can usually bring a dead EV back with a jump pack or another car, but the details differ from a petrol car. The 12-volt battery may sit in the frunk, under a floor panel, or somewhere hard to reach, and some models provide dedicated jump terminals instead, occasionally hidden behind a small cover on the front bumper. If the doors will not open electrically, a mechanical key is often tucked inside the fob. The manual covers all of this, and it is worth reading the page before you need it, not at night in a car park.

The other direction matters too. Many manufacturers advise against using an EV to jump-start another car, because the starter motor of a petrol engine can draw more current than the EV's DC-DC converter and 12-volt circuit are designed to supply. A few models, including some Hyundai and Kia EVs, add a 12-volt reset button that borrows a little energy from the main pack to revive the small battery; if yours has one, learn where it is.

Once the car is running, keep it switched on, ideally driven for a while or left in its "ready" state, so the DC-DC converter can recharge the 12-volt battery. A battery that has gone completely flat once is often weakened, so a test afterwards is sensible. Recurring drain after an update is worth reporting to the dealer, since over-the-air updates sometimes change how the car sleeps.

Something to do this week

Open your manual, or the digital version on the car's screen, and find three things: where the 12-volt battery or the jump terminals are, how to open the car with the mechanical key, and whether your model has a 12-volt reset. Write the page numbers on a note in the glovebox. If the battery is more than three years old and you have never had it tested, ask for a load test at your next tyre change or service. It costs very little next to a tow. Other ownership basics are in the EV ownership section.
