Standing at a public charger that refuses to start a session is one of the more frustrating moments of owning an electric car, mostly because the error messages these machines display are rarely specific enough to tell you what is actually wrong. The plug seats correctly, the screen lights up, and then nothing happens, or it fails partway through with a code that means nothing without a search afterward.

Most of these failures are fixable in under five minutes once you know the usual order of things to check, and almost none of them mean there is anything wrong with your car.

Why a charger failing to start is rarely about your car

Public charging hardware sits outside year round, gets used by a wide range of vehicles with slightly different software behavior, and runs on network connectivity that is not always reliable at a given location. The failure point is almost always somewhere in that chain, the charger itself, its connection to the network, or the payment processing step, rather than anything happening inside your car's charging system.

This is worth knowing upfront because it changes how you troubleshoot. You are not debugging your car. You are working around a piece of public infrastructure that, like any outdoor hardware with a network dependency, fails in predictable and usually temporary ways.

The restart sequence worth trying before calling anyone

Unplug the connector fully, wait about ten seconds, and plug it back in. This simple restart resolves a surprising share of failed sessions, since a lot of charger errors come from the handshake between the charger and the car's onboard computer failing to complete cleanly on the first attempt. If that does not work, try ending any session that might be stuck in the charger's app or card reader before attempting to start a new one, since some chargers will not accept a new session request while they think a previous one is still technically active.

If you are charging through a smartphone app rather than tapping a card, closing and reopening the app, or toggling your phone's data connection off and back on, clears a surprising number of app side failures that have nothing to do with the charger hardware itself.

What a payment error actually means versus a hardware fault

Error messages that reference payment, authorization, or account status point to a problem in the billing step, which is a completely different issue from a hardware fault and usually has nothing to do with your actual card or account balance. These errors often come from a dropped connection between the charger and the network's payment processor, something outside your control and outside the charger's control too in that moment.

A hardware fault, by contrast, usually shows up as the connector failing to lock, a persistent error that survives multiple restart attempts, or a display that is physically malfunctioning. Knowing which category you are dealing with helps you decide whether to keep retrying the same charger or move on to another one, a decision that matters a lot when you are already factoring in how public fast chargers price a charging session and do not want to waste time on a unit that was never going to work.

When to call the network instead of walking away

Every major charging network has a support line, usually printed on the charger itself or available through the app, and calling it is worth doing before giving up entirely, especially if you are relying on that specific location to get home. Support staff can often remotely reset a specific charger, confirm whether there is a known outage at that site, or manually authorize a session that the automated system is refusing to start.

Keep the charger's unique identification number handy when you call, usually a short code printed on a sticker on the unit itself, since support cannot diagnose a remote reset without knowing exactly which charger you are standing at.

Why the charger next to it is not always a safe bet

At a multi charger site, it is tempting to simply try the unit next to the broken one, and sometimes that works fine. But if the failure was caused by a site wide issue, a network outage or a problem with the site's electrical connection, the neighboring charger may show the same error moments later, costing you time you could have spent driving to a different location entirely.

A quick glance at the charging network's app, which usually shows real time status for nearby chargers, tells you whether the problem is isolated to one unit or affecting the whole site before you commit more time standing there.

Building a short list of backup chargers before you need one

The owners who handle a failed charging session with the least stress are usually the ones who already know two or three alternative charging locations along their regular routes, rather than discovering for the first time at a dead charger that the nearest backup is twenty minutes away. This is the same kind of preparation that makes the difference in everyday EV ownership feel manageable rather than stressful, knowing your options ahead of time rather than figuring them out under pressure with a low battery.

A failed charging session is annoying, but it is rarely a sign of a bigger problem, and in almost every case the fix is faster than the frustration makes it feel in the moment.
